Dean Millman was an art prodigy who awed those who knew him. His artwork amazed people. From the time he could hold a pencil this young man never stopped drawing. Of the dozens of art contests he entered throughout his life Dean never won less than first place or best of show.

Dean was a force to be reckoned with. Mature beyond his years, he would have achieved success regardless of the pursuit. Dean first earned local fame at the age of 12 when he rode a bicycle 200 miles to visit a friend in New York state. The following year, after moving with his family to Utah, Dean accomplished the even more audacious task of riding a ten-speed bicycle across the United States, becoming perhaps the youngest person ever to do so. In June 1962 he began in Sunset, Utah and rode the bike directly to New York City, and then to Williamstown, Massachusetts. It took him six weeks to ride over 2600 miles. He was featured on the local news and in the newspapers across the country. Another unique distinction of the trip was that he was afterwards presented on the popular TV game show “To Tell the Truth” as certainly one of the youngest persons to appear on that program. Dean died in 1977 from leukemia at the age of 28.

Dean became a successful artist as a teenager. He painted the large mural for his high school graduation. His entry for phone book cover for northern Nevada was selected in 1970. In 1971 Dean was featured in one of the first issues of The New Era.

Dean loved to travel. He went to Alaska and traveled with his brother Neil through Central America in 1971. Dean attended BYU but dropped out before graduation because he wanted to prove to the world that his success was due solely to his own talent and not to academic aptitude. He studied with many of today’s most esteemed artists, and was highly regarded by all who knew him.

In 1976 Dean became very ill and was diagnosed with leukemia. He passed away in February of 1977. Even after thirty years many persons recall Dean’s incredible personality and achievement.
